Creative Towns

Welcome to Creative Towns – the website for our AHRC-funded research project, Civic Theatres: A Place for Towns.

The aim of the research is to explore the value of theatre to towns and its townspeople. Cultural activity in towns has been overlooked, and our research will provide insights by investigating the role of community, professional, and amateur theatres in towns across England. By engaging a wide body of theatre-makers, stakeholders, and townspeople, we would like to support a public conversation about the role of theatre in towns, and develop new proposals for inclusive civic theatres that address, represent, and meet twenty-first century challenges.

This project is a collaboration between researchers at Royal Holloway, University of London and the University of Manchester. Our research partners are The National Theatre, Manchester Royal Exchange, The Little Theatre Guild, with Tribe Arts as Collaborating Organisation. As our research has evolved, we have developed new partnerships with theatres across England, including Farnham Maltings, The Stables Theatre Hastings and Spinners Mill in Leigh.

Next Event: The Future of Theatre in Towns 20 January 2022, 5.30-7pm Online and free. Frequently overlooked, theatres in towns offer opportunities for local people to take part in theatre both as audiences and theatre-makers. This free online event, designed for people who have interests in theatre in their towns and local areas, asks what theatre will look like in towns in the future.
